Not too long ago, we were making New Year’s resolutions and promising that we will be sticking to them throughout the year! Statistics, however, say that by the second week of January most of us have failed at our goals. We are sleeping in, instead of going to the gym; heading for the sweets, and forgetting about the fruits and vegetables; putting work before family; and starting to pick up our old habits such as smoking. Does this sound familiar?
Why is it that only a few of us end up achieving our goals, while the majority of the population has a tendency to fail miserably? There is no real secret or a magical formula to setting goals and achieving… rather it’s something that is inside each and every one of us. The difference between someone who achieves their goals and someone who doesn’t is very simple – it comes down to commitment and positive emotional involvement.
Commitment is common sense; you either have it or you don’t. Commitment can be measured by how bad you want the end results – or how bad you do not want the end result. Think about where you will end up in 10 years if you maintain your current lifestyle. How does your body look then? How fast will your health be deteriorating? What does your financial situation look like? Would you be proud of yourself?
Positive emotional involvement is another story. In short, it means being emotionally committed to accomplishing your goals in a positive state of mind.
Oprah Winfrey was asked about her career goals and what she wanted to accomplish. Her eyes immediately lit-up as she started explaining how she wanted to change the world by positively impacting every individual who watched her show or read her books and magazines. In the same interview she was asked about her exercise routine. Immediately her body language and physiology changed; she quietly said that she doesn’t enjoy exercising. As a matter of fact she used the word “hate” when referring to working towards her health goals, and said she only does it to keep the extra weight away.
If you haven’t guessed yet, she was able to accomplish her extraordinary goal of changing the world because she is emotionally and positively committed and connected to the positive outcomes she envisions. On the other hand, her personal goal of losing weight falls short every year because of her negative way of thinking towards this issue.
In essence, the difference between positive and negative goal setting is your mental attitude. Those goals that are backed by positive thoughts and end results get accomplished, while those that you attribute a negative connotation to fail time and time again.
So if you are looking to lose weight for example, think about all the positive feelings and emotions that losing weight brings as a result – rather than just thinking that you don’t want to be overweight anymore. Go back to your New Year’s resolutions and see which goals you are one hundred percent sure about, and why. The commitment portion, however, completely depends on you, and how much you value your life and are willing to make positive changes.
Don’t be another statistic of failure. It’s not too late! Start living like today is the beginning of the rest of your life! Write down those goals again and get excited about achieving them; get focused and stay consistent.
Last month we talked about making New Year’s resolutions and sticking with them by staying positive and focused. Statistics however, say that by the second week of January most of us have failed at our goals. We are sleeping in, instead of going to the gym; heading for the sweets, and forgetting about the fruits and vegetables; putting work before family; and starting to pick up our old habits such as smoking. Does this sound familiar?
To see exactly where you stand in relation to your goals, ask yourself “what is my commitment level” and “how bad do I want to achieve them?” This gives you a sense of how emotionally involved you are in every single one of your goals. Are you in a peak state of excitement, focused and committed when you speak about your goals, or is it something that deep down you dread working towards?
There is really no secret to achieving your goals. It’s within you. It really is how bad you want the end results, and also how bad you do not want the opposite. Think about where you will end up with the same lifestyle as you have right now in 10 years? What does your body look like in 10 years? How fast will your health be deteriorating? What does your financial situation look like? Would you be proud of yourself?
It’s not too late! Start living like today is the beginning of the rest of your life! Write down those goals again and get excited about achieving them; get focused and stay consistent. Don’t be another statistic of failure.

As we get closer to the end of the year, we tend to not only reflect back at how we lived our lives in the past twelve months, but more importantly the changes we want to make in the new year.
When I ask my patients about their New Year’s Resolutions as it relate to their health and wellness goals, I get a mixed array or responses. While some are optimistic and excited about writing down their new goals and ambitions – no matter how many times they have failed in the past – others approach the new year with a certain negativity and pessimism, saying “What’s the point? Eighty percent of people can’t keep their resolutions two weeks into January anyway!” I even got this response from one of my patients, “Even Oprah Winfrey couldn’t stick to her wellness goals and keep the weight off!”
This brings up something I’d like to share with you; the secret to setting goals that you can actually achieve. I’ve learned that the difference between someone who achieves their goals and someone who doesn’t is very simple – it comes down to commitment and positive emotional involvement.
Commitment is common sense; you either have it or you don’t. Positive emotional involvement on the other hand is another story.
As a matter of fact she used the word “hate” when referring to her health goals, and said she only does it to keep the extra fat away.
If you haven’t guessed yet, she was able to accomplish her extraordinary goal of changing the world because she was/is emotionally committed. On the other hand, her personal goal of losing weight falls short every year because of her negative way of thinking towards this issue.
In essence that is the difference between positive and negative goal setting. Those goals that are backed by positive results get accomplished, while those that have a negative thought attached to them fail time and time again.
So if you are looking to lose weight for example, think to yourself that you want to be healthy and vibrant as a result – not because you don’t want to be fat. Go through your New Year’s resolution list to see which ones you are completely and one hundred percent positive about, and why. The commitment part however, is completely up to how much you value your life and are willing to change for the better.
Good luck with your goals! Let us know if we can help you accomplish them in 2011. Happy holidays and happy New Year!
A recent article I read states that ‘you may be able to extend your life and stay fit throughout your old age with a simple change of diet that switches on your “youth” gene.
Apparently all those carbohydrates we tend to eat can alter our youth gene as well as negatively influence our longevity gene as well. I have also read many articles and research papers on how reducing caloric intake (whether it’s from Carbs, fats, or protein) helps us live healthier and longer lives. Read the full article for more details.
Every mom wants the absolute best for their kids from the moment the baby is in the womb til way into adulthood. To know that your baby is in the breech position and have to go through C-section without actually having a choice. What most moms with breech babies don’t know is that there are soo many ways to help turn breech position babies. Webster Technique is only one of many things you can do to help your baby. The purpose of the Webster Technique is not to ‘turn a breech baby’. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment which reduces nerve system stress, improves pelvic muscle and ligament function reducing torsion to the uterus and potential intrauterine constraint allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth. Once the tension and structural strain are reduced, in a case of a breech baby, it provides more support for the correct positioning of the baby and the baby is more likely to turn. The purpose of the Webster Technique is not to ‘turn breech babies’ but it’s been known to do to so, due to the reduction in tension of the ligaments in the pelvic area as well as opening up the space for the baby.
Other than this Technique that a Webster technique certified chiropractor can perform, there are things that you can do at home in order to help your breech baby. Click here for more information.
Here is an article in JAMA, Journal of American Medical Association on Actual Causes of Death in the United States. I found it interesting that most of the causes of death mentioned in this abstract are due to poor life style choices (inactivity and poor diet). The name of my practice is Wellness Choice Center, because I believe that every day we make choices, good ones and bad ones. It’s important to realize all of our choices lead to our life style whether it’s wellness and health or dis-ease.

#2 Poor Diet & Physical Inactivity (400,000 deaths, 16%)
